What Lessons Can We Learn From Our Mastermind Group?

Over the weekend I traveled into London to meet up with other members of our Mastermind Group, I always enjoy the opportunity to share ideas,to gain the advantage of the view of many heads rather than one and of course it was an opportunity to catch up with friends,a real win-win basically

Too often I believe we plough our own furrow but as Michael Gerber taught us, often the problem with the boss is that the boss doesn’t have one, sometimes it is really important to have an external view to hold you to account and to my mind that is exactly what a Mastermind Group does

Now let’s be honest here, a Mastermind Group that just praises what you are doing serves no real purpose,no the true power of a Mastermind Group is to support, develop and critically challenge you and to a large extent that is exactly what I encountered on Saturday

Why should being challenged prove important? I think simply that we must remember that we write for and sell products to our audience, therefore our sole purpose is to meet and exceed their expectations, if we ever start just to flatter our own egos then our Mastermind Group will act as a strong brake on that

Gaining Maximum Advantage From Our Mastermind Group

In order to gain maximum advantage from our Mastermind Group we must think both in terms of what we want and also in terms of what we are going to invest in the group in return, all take and no give will never work in this kind of situation,in order to get what you want you must in turn be willing to help others achieve what they want

Now granted when you first start out you are not in a position to offer much but you are in a position to offer your views, a second pair of eyes and an alternative voice of what somebody else is doing, making your Mastermind Group work is not just about teaching, often it is about helping people simply to get started

And here in lies perhaps the biggest reason for failure in online businesses and that is a sheer sense of overwhelm, instead of breaking tasks down people just see too much in front of them and no way of getting to the other side, every journey of a 1000 miles must start with a first step and your Mastermind Group is that important first step

As your own skill levels rise you must of course hold out your hand and help people up, you now know which resources work and which don’t,you broadly know where to source products and services and vitally you have gone through and solved your own key frustrations,by sharing this knowledge and developing other members of your Mastermind Group you begin to complete the process

The Best Resources For Developing Your Mastermind Group

The origins of today’s Mastermind Group go back to the meeting between Andrew Carnegie and the man who we probably now regard as the father of the process Napoleon Hill, personally I think Hill will get the credit but Carnegie really created the principal, for more details read my post from Feb 21

A lack of knowledge is a key reason for joining a Mastermind Group it can paralyze you and leave you feeling completely overwhelmed,my post on the 21st March sets out my ideas on how to counter that and to ensure you get the help and support when you need it

Michael Gerber famously said the problem with the boss is the Boss Doesn’t Have One your Mastermind Group will hold you to account, Michael Gerber’s E Myth Enterprise will also hold you to account and critically explain the key failing that holds back most entrepreneurs and how to make sure you don’t fall into this trap

So it’s time to hand things over to you for your thoughts, are you a member of a Mastermind Group, do you find the support invaluable or do you resent it,speaking personally here I really value my Mastermind Group

Precious Asset

Precious Asset

Time Is A Precious Asset Don’t Let It Dwindle Away

I started out today wondering what to talk about but looking at my in box it became obvious, time is a Precious Asset and if we are not careful it just dwindles away following promises that don’t deliver and plans that never quite put into action

So why was I inspired by my in box or maybe even driven to write by the sheer amount of e mail that arrives daily, I could easily use my Precious Asset pursuing all of those offers but I know it won’t help me achieve what I set out to do this morning

Simple really, like many of you I receive a lot of blog comments, a lot of them are genuine with a range of interesting and constructive observations but increasingly the spammers are moving in with their adsense covered junk pages and worse,my Precious Asset like I know yours does gets taken up dealing with this instead of focusing on other activities

On the one hand you want to feel close to your readers but on the other hand you don’t want to spend a couple of hours a day weeding out the genuine ones from the shower trays, online gambling and the adult stuff, sorry but I don’t want to know about the doll you bought a few months ago, I have more important things to invest my Precious Asset on

Utilize Your Precious Asset By Maintaining Focus

So with all these distractions going on it’s critical to maintain focus, otherwise your Precious Asset, your time just gets away from you and you look back thinking what have I actually achieved from my to do list, today, this week or even over the last few weeks, yes we can do it tomorrow but let’s be honest here tomorrow never comes does it

This leads neatly onto why you are doing this, is it a business? in which case treat it like one, take it seriously and ask yourself a critical question, am I just creating work for myself or am I actually achieving anything both in terms of return on investment and in terms of participation because otherwise you are squandering that most Precious Asset

Clearly with anything there will be growing pains as you learn the best solutions for a given situation and here it’s important to refer back to your Mastermind Group for support and ideas, making best use of your Precious Asset is critical in your success or it will be the architect of your downfall

Given that time and focus are your most Precious Asset how do you go about making better use of your time and getter laser focused? I would say it all starts with planning, having an accountability partner is really important, remember the Michael Gerber comment, the problem with the boss is the boss doesn’t have one?

Resources To Develop Your Most Precious Asset

So what resources can you use to develop your most Precious Asset? well I think the most important resource you must pull down is your Outsourcer if you are struggling with technical issues, time issues or just simple capacity issues you need to put the day to day operations in some bodies capable hands and make them an extension of your team

Next on your list for developing your most Precious Asset is this Free report on Time Management we all start out with the same amount of it but some people make much better use of it, by developing your skills in this area you will get 3 to 4 times the amount of work done that a non productive person will

Lastly on developing your Precious Asset would be this Audio program, Stephen Covey clearly explains the difference between urgent and not important, his teaching is really profound and I would urge anybody who hasn’t heard his work to listen to it and those who have to listen to it again

So I started out earlier talking about my in box and ended up talking about the profound work of one of today’s greatest thinkers and educators but as always I’d like to hear what you think, how do you keep on track, manage your time and make use of your Precious Asset

Online Resolutions

Online Resolutions

What Do Online Resolutions Tell Us About Ourselves?

With 2010 racing to a close it’s perhaps a good time to consider Online Resolutions, those promises that we make to ourselves, our significant others and sometimes to a much wider audience, why do so many people set out with good intentions and yet fall so short on their promises?

Personally I think a lot of it is a lack of proper planning, in the offline world I was brought up to believe that you cannot manage what you cannot measure, as time progressed and I became the boss I in turn tried to ensure my staff also understood the importance of this, in short I think it can be boiled down to the following thought, failing to plan is just planning to fail, that may sound hard but in my experience it’s true every time

When it comes to doing business the same rules always apply, the medium may change but that’s all, when people make Online Resolutions they often do so against the backdrop of wild claims and false promises of instant success for no effort, be under no illusion that the very people selling you that idea will themselves have worked very hard to produce the product

Perhaps most importantly is the huge gulf between what people want to achieve from their Online Resolutions and how little they actually get done, Michael Gerber described this perfectly when he said most people are technicians, just doing it, doing it, doing it, the problem with this is it never achieves the result they are looking for and yet the never step back and ask why

Really when we come down to it Online Resolutions are really about goal setting and goal setting is about breaking seemingly overwhelming tasks down into small steps, to do today, to do tomorrow etc, it’s also about measuring your progress on at least a weekly basis and not allowing yourself the luxury of excuses, after all you can kid everybody else but if your like me you can’t kid the person who is harder on you that anybody else, yes I’m talking about you!

Online Resolutions The Gulf Between The Dream And Reality

If we look at the majority of people the Gulf between the dream in their Online Resolutions and the reality is massive, let’s look at why that is and let’s start with how most people do things online, next let’s look at their ideal life they mapped out, it’s as though the two lists never saw the same set of ideas in the first place

This was recently described to me as a bucket test, those things you want to do before you kick the bucket, now relate this to the list of things you are currently doing and ask yourself will my current actions achieve my Online Resolution and I strongly suspect the answer will be no, put simply you have failed your own bucket test

So how do you make yourself follow through on your Online Resolutions? I have a few suggestions, accountability partners, a person or preferably people who know of your goals, write them down and record them and send an MP3 file to each partner and get them to send their goals to you, now you are both supporting and gently cajoling each other at the same time

Now this of course shouldn’t be all about sticks to beat yourself with, don’t know about you but every once in a while I want a treat, so try this, agree a once weekly get together to share your achievements, either in person, on the phone or by e mail and tell your accountability partner how well they’ve done, just remember every once in a while your going to be carrying the big anti BS stick and you need to call them on it

Helpful Resources For Your Online Resolutions

So what resources can you use to try and make better use of your time, I’m going to start with Spencer Johnson and a book called One Minute For Myself a word of warning however if your friends borrow it don’t expect to see it back, I brought his book Who Moved My Cheese when I went to Spain on a business trip years ago, the guy who borrowed it is no longer with us and we all miss him dearly

My next resource would be from Michael Gerber, it’s an audio recording called The E-Myth Michael explains why most people are good at being busy, just not busy doing anything valuable, he explains how to set yourself free from your business and to achieve the true success you deserve with your Online Resolutions

Now I could go on with this but this next man was recognized when he was quite young as an exceptional talent, we are very lucky that both he and the foundation that bears his name still share the message today, if you truly want to achieve your Online Resolutions your library is not complete without a copy of Stephen Covey’s The 8th Habit

Stephen talks of a profound hunger for knowledge throughout the world, of people who have lost their voice and want to speak out, to find their voice, if you haven’t done so listen to this man, really listen, so in finishing up it just leaves me to wish you a happy and successful 2011, as always I would love to hear what you think, so why not send me your Online Resolutions
